If you're listening to this CD, chances are you've heard Maine Marimba Ensemble perform and wanted to take some of those sounds home with you. We thank you and hope that you enjoy this, our first recorded offering as a group.

Like many traditional forms of African art and expression, this music has deep roots that can be traced back for nearly a thousand years, if not more. Marimba music is composed on the m'bira, hosho, and ngoma. Inspired by dreams, the Shona people of Zimbabwe created this music as a means of communicating with the spirit world, giving thanks, and, in the 19th and 20th centuries, as a weapon against colonial rule and a path to liberation. As in many African cultures, music pervades all facets of life, with participation highly welcomed, encouraged, and embraced. As they say in Zimbabwe, "If you can walk, you can dance . . . If you can talk, you can sing!"

We owe a great debt to the musicians who have shared this music with us through their teachings, recordings, and performances. Many traditional and contemporary artists have had a major impact on us as artists and people: Dumisani Maraire, Oliver Mtukudzi, Alport Mhlanga, and Thomas Mapfumo, to name a few. This music has a way of finding you, and we feel honored, privileged, and blessed to play it.

Thank you for listening!
